My Locations

My shot break down shows the different locations that I will be filming in.
These are as follows:

The Woods
The Street

A field

A tunnel

Using a projector

The Motorway

I also used a projector, part of the schools facilities.
Things to consider when in these different areas:

  • Time of day- will the visibility be clear enough to film?
  • Weather- check the weather forecast frequently
  • If the location is outside, how will we get there?
  • Is it a safe place to film?

Sketches of proposed ideas for Digipak and Advertisement

These are my ideas which I sketched for my digipak and advertisements. As my Bands name is Plan X, I wanted to incorporate the design in to a clock, with 'X' being the roman numeral for 10. Therefore, my album cover is called 'After Dark.' I have designed this way as I think that the clock would become an important marketing symbol for my band if they were to continue. This is why the digipak, video and advertisement all include a clock. I think it is very important to remain consistent throughout the design. Therefore, I will use the same font, American Typewriter and keep my digpak black and white. The Black and white images also represent the 'after dark' theme of my digipak.

The front of the digipak must include both Andy and Molly. As previously explained, I found an image that I liked on Pinterest with a similar image of a girl sitting against a brick wall.
I like this image because of the simplicity of the design. I thought therefore I could replicate this image and add my own twist to it. I have not decided whether to have Andy and Molly's head upside down like it is in the image and think that once I have taken the photo I will have a better idea of what will look best. The location will be an old railway bridge, which now has graffiti on the inside. I want the costume to be extremely casual and low-key, therefore, jeans and coats will suit the image well. I want the image to be taken at night time to fit with the theme of after dark, therefore, I will need additional lights so that the image is not too dark. Therefore, I think I will use the high bean on my car to create extra lighting. I do not need any props to include this image- i think that simplicity is more effective.

The back of the front cover features both Andy and Molly, because I think it is important that they feature in a lot of their marketing and advertising on the CD, as the fans have bought the CD to see and relate to the Band. The image features Molly and Andy standing against a different wall covered in pink graffiti reading 'freedom'. They are both directly staring in to the camera, remaining eye-contact. In editing, I will place the photo of a lighter (that I took earlier) and change the transparency of it so that the image lays on top. The image will be black and white. The name of the editors, producers etc will be listed in the centre at the bottom of the page (in this case, me!)

CD --> The CD once again features Molly and Andy. This time, a projector of an aztec design will be projected on to their faces. I will then turn the image black and white. After looking at current existing CD's, many of them have an "All Rights Reserved" notice on them. I think that this is very important as copyright and piracy is a major problem within the music industry, equating to the current economic loss of 1.222 billion. therefore, this will be included around the edge of the CD. The Roman numerals of the clock will be  represented around the outside and the large 'X', representing the name of the band and 10 o'clock, which refers to the album name 'after dark' The 'X' will be quite large and I will edit it making it slightly transparent.

Back of the CD album cover --> The back of the CD cover will feature the graffiti bridge from a distance. The graffiti will be visible, again there will be a clock with roman numerals and the 'X" will be large. In the centre of the clock will be the other songs included on the album.

This is my plan for the advertisement. The location on the site will be in a junk yard. There will be old pieces of machinery and building materials. The image will be black and white, and will feature both Andy and Molly. At the top of the page, the clock with roman numerals will be featured with the large 'X' Underneath, the various information will be posted about the new album that is coming out. It will also include the website s well as the blackberry scan barcode and twitter and Facebook logos, to let readers know how else they can connect. I think that it also makes the advertisement more user-frienly.

Actors/Actress'

I have cast a number of different people for my video, in order to make my video more interesting and relateable to a wider audience.
Lauren Sahota

Age: 19
I chose Lauren Sahota because she has a distinct individual style which would help portray the genre of my music video. As well as this, She has a different ethnic origin, which shows that the genre and production of this music video is accepting to a wider community.
Molly McConnell

Age:18
I used Molly McConnell for a number of different reasons. Firstly, as a media student herself, I feel like I will be able to give her direction that she will understand, and hopefully, she will be able to assist me in creating the right genre that I want for my music video. Secondly, she is a diverse character, and is she great for my genre, but she isn't shy to perform to the best of her ability.
Andy Froud

Age:18
I used Andy because he fits the genre the best, as his personal style is exactly what I envisage when I think about my music video.
Ben McCarthy

Age:17
As a younger character, I feel that ben will be able to bring the energy which is needed for the video. With a good sense of style that too naturally fits to the brief well, I cast Ben because I know how he works, having previously been in my other projects for AS media.
Charlotte Ward

Age:19
Charlotte will fit well with the brief that I will give her as she can take direction and is not shy in front of the camera, having previous drama and acting experiences. Again, her style is inspirational for the image that I want to create for my music video and I think she will be great in the video.
Jemma Convery
Age:19
I am using Jemma because of her previous acting experiences. She is very confident and will add a strong fun atmosphere to the video!

The reason that I have used natural shots of themselves rather than a casting photo is because I want to use their current and existing styles to inspire my photos.

Music Video Plot

From the beginning of this coursework, I decided that I wanted to do a concept-based music video, for many reasons.
Firstly, I thought that it fitted the brief well, as many indie music videos are very random and have no particular message to convey. An example of this is Pompeii by Bastille:

The second reason why I wanted to do a concept based video is because of my limited resources. After carefully analysing what resources I had for my music video, I realised that due to the environment where I live, I was going to be limited in the locations and props available for me. Therefore, I adapted to my environment, and decided that using woodland areas would be a effective and current location of where to film part of my music video.

My Story
Taking this in to account, I thought of a brief story that I wish to convey. Despite my band being made up of two girls and one boy member, I have a couple of extra's both boys and girls. This is because I want to promote young, fresh, happiness throughout my video. I think by having more actors, it will create a happy, more relatable vibe with my target market.
Each person, including the band members, are all meeting up in the woods to hang out. The video essentially capsulate their day, and them getting ready, in order to meet up with their friends.
Although I was previously worried about how my band members would get lost amongst the extras in the video, I narrowed the number down slightly, so that more attention and emphasise could be put on them. I also added approximately five scenes, which shows them playing music.
When I was planning my video, I thought that it would make the exciting and memorable if there was an element of performance too. Despite this however, I was unable to find a.) a suitable venue such as a stage b.) enough people to fully encapsulate the atmosphere of what a concert would be like. However, again I made adaptions to my plans, and instead will show the band playing within a music rehearsal room.
In conclusion, despite me having to make changes, I think that I have done it to the best of my ability. Although some resources are limited, I feel that I can create a music video that is intersting and relateable.

Pitch for my music video

Pitch
The song that I have chosen for my music video is ‘Saint Era’ by Candle lights. I did a lot of research online for my chosen band. I new that I wanted an indie/folk genre, with an all male cast.
Eventually, I found Saint Era on unsigned.com. I picked this song because I could picture adding visuals and thought that it was an interesting and upbeat song, which is what I was after.
I have decided to do a concept-based video. This is not just because I think it will be the easiest type of video to produce, but also because I think that the indie genre is seen as having a care-free and relaxed vibe, which I think would best be portrayed as concept based.
I started to gather inspiration for my music video as soon as I chose the song. I had decided that I didn’t want any story and instead, to show random acts of everyday life. I have done a mood board on my blog showing these everyday things, for example, people walking down streets, signs, graffiti, ambulance, people laughing, reading, skateboarding etc. It will have a hippie vibe!
As well as this, I want to use a number of camera techniques such as handheld, tracking, panning, high angle, low angle and extreme close up. These camera movements will help diagnose a relationship between the audience and performer.
At first I didn’t no if this was going to work and I still have my doubts now, as I think that it could be portrayed as boring! But I feel that I can make it cool and interesting with use of edits and effects.
For example, I hope to use colorization filter of black and white and perhaps sepia. I want to also use the digital effect of an old movie, to make it more indie.
I want to keep the style as simple and casual attire. The whole theme of the video is casual and down to earth and want costumes to reflect that. During the later stages of my design, I was thinking about having a sign that could represent my band, and if that’s so then I will make sure the people within my video have something to do with this symbol.
I am having both boys and girls within the video: I think that as my target audience focuses on both then I should include both to give more diversity to the visuals. They will be of a similar age to us, but I want them to try and represent an older age.
Although I am not planning on using any artificial lighting, I no that I want to take scenes both in day and night. This is again to add diversity to the frame, and I think that night creates more hype and tension for the audience.
Weather could be an issue for me as I am planning much of my video outside, however, I also plan to do rainy scenes and so I think that I will be able to work around the weather when shooting my video!
