Initial Analysis of Music Videos: What purpose does it serve?

Looking at how a video is produced using different media techniques to establish a relationship between the artist and the audience.


  • Camera Shots
-Eye line Match- at the beginning, Beyonce has direct contact with the audience.
-Low angle- shows Beyonce as a strong, dominant female. 
-High angle- this could be interpreted as  looking weak, however, it is clear that Beyonce has a strong persona and therefore, it suggests dominance.
  • Camera Movement
-Tracking- enables us to focus on the star. We can engage with them. 
-Zoom in/out- we are able to capture certain aspects of her movement. Also makes the visuals more interesting. 
-Extreme close-up- Shows the emotions within Beyonce's face, enables the audience to relate to her.
  • Digital Effects
-Black and white filter effects- perhaps suggests something different about the music video. Also, it shows Beyonce as classy and sophisticated.
  • Lighting
-Fade in at the beginning. Introduces the performer to the audience.
-Spotlight- focuses all of our attention on to them.
  • Mise-en-scene
-All Black and white monochrome-suggets sophisticated, old school. 
-Costumes- Black Leotards, to show sex appeal.
  • Editing
- Fast Edits- Gives movement to the music, relates it to a fast pase which is exciting for the audience.
